In what was being billed as a 'head to head' of Britain's heavyweight channels, last nights BBC versus ITV showdown of World Cup final coverage was a largely dull affair.
BBC opted for the bland line up of Hansen, Shearer and Dixon who all decided to wear suit and ties rather than the uniform grey shirts they had been sporting all tournament. While ITV went with Townsend, Southgate and Desailly who were all told to treat the night as if it was 'end of term' and wear what the hell they liked.
In a predictable move, although nobody predicted a score, every one of the 'pundits' said they thought Spain would win.
The highlight came at the end of the night when Alan Shearer claimed he had tipped Spain to win it all along.....in addition to his other tips Brazil, Argentina, Holland, Germany and anybody else!
When Lineker asked him ''did he think De Jong should have been sent off for his 'Kung Fu' attack on a Spanish player?'' he delighted fans by using his catchphrase ''Well Gary, I've seen those given!.''
